04.19.2007 "IT'S ABOUT TIME" PS3 FIRMWARE UPDATE

The PlayStation 3 Firmware 1.7 update is now available, here's what you can finally do with your PS3:

  • The ability to play PS1 games on your PS3 (you can download from the PS store and play the games on the PS3 as opposed to having to play on the PSP).
  • You can plug in any PS1/PS2 accessory and it will work and work with rumble. This means that you can plug in a PS2 controller if you happen to have a PS2 USB adapter, and it will rumble in PS2 games. You also can use steering wheels and any other vibrating accessory.
  • You can transfer your PS1 data to a PSP memory stick, and play on there. So you can copy your PS1 data to your PS3 through the memory card adapter, and then copy it onto a memory stick so you can have your PS1 saves for the PSP games you have.
  • PAL backwards compatibility has been greatly improved (according to NeoGAF). One user reports GT4, Devil May Cry 3, MGS2 works, Gradius V, Jak 3, Soul Calibur 3, Ratchet and Clank 1 and 2, all are outputting at 576p as well.
  • If you press triangle on your login (if you have multiple logins) you can set which one you want to auto-login.
Is this "this is living" yet? Because I'm ready to start living, I'm just waiting for the official word from you, Sony. Take your time.

11.09.2006 NO RUMBLE FOR N64 VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES

Boo! Hiss! Nintendo you're slipping lately. Definitely not enough to make me no longer consider snatching up a Wii right away, but I make fun of Sony plenty, so I've gotta be fair and call you a blooming Georgia O'Keefe vagina when you do stupid things like this.

The Virtual Console is a huge reason to pick up the relatively cheap Wii system, which will let you play NES, SNES, Genesis, Nintendo 64, and even GameCube games. The other cool trick to this setup is that you can play all the old games you love without dealing with the sometimes annoying Wiimote. So naturally those GameCube controllers are going to have quite the extended life of button mashing, but for some reason the only shaking the controllers will be doing for Virtual Console gaming is when your adderall wares off. I know Nintendo wants people to buy the classic controller, which does not have force feedback, but if we get to play old games with the GameCube controllers, then I see no reason to be deprived of Agony Stone and other useful thumble rumbles.
