They knew what would work ?? It took 360 almost a year to correct all the things that were wrong with the original 360. People complained, but not loudly, because they had nothing to compare it to. Now 1 1/2 years later, the 360 seems to have everything kosher, but people are demanding the PS3 should be that and more. The PS3 has something to be compared to, unlike the 360 at launch. That's why there is all the hating. Well my 360 can already do this, blah, blah, blah....
The games are coming - if you have a 360, wait until the exclusives come. If you are choosing 360/PS3/or Wii, the answer is obvious.

And games - the next gen catalog must haves is short. Resistance is a great game that is even becoming greater with add-on, new features etc... same goes for Motorstorm - new tracks soon hopefully, race modes, and mind blowing graphics... MLB the Show is the best baseball simulation game by far... not to mention the Playstation store and how that has just taken off and basically being updated every week with FREE stuff to try. Imagine that FREE connection and FREE stuff ??? And that's just a recap of the games I've really enjoyed - but I'm a casual when I get time gamer.
I'm still in awe of everything that this black box can do - I never played a 360, so some probably think a lot of things that I find amazing are old hat because Microsoft is already doing some of those. But, its still so cool. $600 is a lot to ask of someone, but not for one second do I think it wasn't worth it. Do I wish it was cheaper, well shit yeah....who wouldn't ?? You are talking to someone that has dropped $$$ on PS 1 when it was in the $250-300 range, imagine that ??? That was 15 years ago. I've bought my share of regrets - Sega CD, 32x, etc...
Think of where this was 6 months ago - everyone hating on Sony, because the second coming of Jesus wasn't in the box....BUT look what's coming and they keep it updated with stuff that people want. 1.80 update just came out and I just finished networking it to my PC. It is the hub of my living room.

Here's my unbiased opinion that you didn't want :)
What sold me on the PS3 - backwards compatability for the best gaming catalog out there, with upscaling of graphics finally - Blu-ray (deny all you want, but its the future) - wi-fi - wireless everything - bluetooh (they don't choke Sony products down your throat, they went for a universal mode this time)- interchangable hard drive
You know the specs, so you know how much of a beast this is, programmers are only just touching the tip of the iceberg. Its only gonna get better the next couple of years

360s ability to turn off/on is the bomb, but its just a copy of the Type S controller, which was patterned after the dual shock, because the original Xbox's loaf of bread controller stunk. The Dual Shocks sticks are set up better than the 360.
The list should be:
1) Dual Shock - because it incorporated everything(rumble, d-pad, sticks, 8 buttons, select, start, and even had wireless models) finally
2) Super NES - for having shoulder buttons
3) Original NES - because it got us away from joysticks
4) Genesis - first contoured controller
5) 360 - just for the ability to turn everything off
The list should be:

I'm missed the happier times of gaming when ads on television/magazines were your only way to get excited about games. Now with the internet and everyone having their "expert" opinion printed, we hear about games waaaaay before they even come in to existence and are so spoiled that once a game comes out, most are done with it in a couple of weeks and onto the next one.
