03.15.2007 GISH SEQUEL IN DEVELOPMENT

People bitch and moan about Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil not getting enough attention all the time, but a much less known game with an even more secretive cult following is the sidescrolling platformer Gish. I love the name, I love the character, and I love the game. You play as a ball of gelatinous tar searching ancient sewer cities for your stolen lady friend, and it never gets more complex than that. Moving is as simple as hitting the left or right keys, but your gooey mass gains momentum and makes every sprint and jump feel unique. To help you navigate more you also have retractable spikes for sticking to walls and attacking enemies. If you're new to Gish, I highly suggest you try out the fun physics in the free demo here. Since Castle Crashers was delayed to 2008, this is the new artsy game I'm looking forward to.

Thanks to GayGamer for noticing that this sequel is in development - the cool Cryptic Sea concept art for Gish 2 can be seen below.

02.13.2007 HARDEST ASCII GAME EVER

Here's a video of an ASCII game that's being called the hardest platformer game of all time by many. The atrocious graphics don't help you navigate from one area to the next, but the real challenge is how much the levels enjoy defeating the player. This video shows how quickly the game can be beaten, complete with an ASCII attack from Street Fighter's Guile, but the whole first four minutes are just the hilarious ways the game tricks and kills you. If you actually want to try and beat it on your own though then I dare you to play "Jineseiowata no Daibouken" here for ten minutes without going crazy. You'll be back for the video in no time.

12.11.2006 FREE GAME: KNYTT

TheLastBoss's robotic friend Destructoid found a freeware adventure game called Knytt that looks simple, yet should give you hours of addictive exploration. Ico and Zelda fans will surely go nuts over this  game's size and depth. In the video above you can see that falling doesn't necessarily mean dying - the light fades and you just venture further in the depths of the underground. How deep does it go? How high? How wide? This hang glider video shows that it's wider than you'd expect as the player zips past countless screens only to find more adventures. With 160 screens total it proves to be quite the journey with plenty of secrets along the way.

All you have to do at the start is run around and jump on walls to climb up them, making exploration fast and fun. The plot it as simple as trying to find your way back to your home world, but you'll be in no hurry as you roam around. To venture further and deeper in the game you'll need to find certain items along the way though, and those that have already played it praise it for its amount of hidden secrets. If you're holding off on Twilight Princess, don't have enough money for cool virtual console games, or just plain bored, then this game should definitely help.

I'm gonna try to bring a variety of different entertaining games to the site each week, so if you find anything extra addictive then let me know.
