04.05.2007 HEY, LET'S LIE, PS3 KICKING ASS DOWN UNDER

The results of the PS3's Australian launch sales are in, and more "records" have been achieved. In the ten days that followed its March 23rd release, more than 27,000 PS3s were sold. Not only is that the biggest surge of launch sales Australia has ever seen, it's also not true. This news has been everywhere today and I was going to end off the day on a good note for Sony gamers, but when I did some backtracking on this site for some kangaroo pictures to use for this post, I realized these claims are entirely false. Cue the dramatic 9/11 Loose Change conspiracy music, let's look at the facts from the past:

  • Australian 4 day Xbox 360 launch: 30,421 consoles sold
  • Australian 4 day Nintendo Wii launch: 32,901 consoles sold
  • Australian ten day PlayStation 3 launch: 27,083 consoles sold
Congratulations Sony, I was going to Photoshop Sixaxis controllers into happy kangaroo hands just for you, but you blew it. Instead you get this dead kangaroo. How can I possibly end off on a good note now? Oh, here Europe, you get Super Rub a Dub bath time fun on the PlayStation Network, and we don't. FUCK YAH!

03.02.2007 PSP GAME BREAKS RECORDS IN JAPAN

The Monster Hunter games for PS2 and PSP have gotten some pretty mediocre reviews in the past, but that doesn't stop Japan from being obsessed with the series. When Capcom's Monster Hunter Freedom PSP game launched in Japan last year it was quickly bought by one out of every five PSP owners, making it the best selling PSP game of its time by far. Altogether the series has sold 2.4 million games worldwide, and that number looks like it's about to go way, way up now that Monster Hunter Freedom 2 just came out in Japan. Of the top thirty best selling games right now in Japan, only two measly PSP games have made the list, but check out how much ass this game is kicking overseas right now:

  • Best selling game (PSP): Monster Hunter Portable 2nd - weekly sales: 705,281
  • 2nd best selling game (PS2): Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri - weekly sales: 80,000
  • 3rd best selling game (Wii): Fire Emblem: Akatsuki no Megami - weekly sales: 75,359
  • 4th best selling game (DS): SimCity DS - weekly sales: 50,826

Nope, that's not a typo or a misplaced comma. If I was the type to wear hats, I'd take it off and bow to that kind of domination over in Japan. Those numbers have earned it the honor of being the fastest selling third party portable game on any format - even the coveted Nintendo DS. Maybe it's time I finally buy a PSP? LocoRoco did look good, but I wish there were more unique games to choose from that I couldn't get else where.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is supposed to have 50% more content than the first game, so even if it disappointed it would at least take a while to beat. And there's even co-op multiplayer battles with up to four wireless friends to consider too, the game seems well rounded. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 comes out in North America some time in September 2007 - that still gives me plenty of time before I have to make any decisions. A price cut shouldn't be too far off anyways.

10.25.2006 Xbox 360 breaks sales records in Australia

Selling over 100,000 360 consoles since its launch in March has dethroned the PS2's previous record of 78,000 units during its first seven months of sale. That's almost an average of 500 Xbox 360s per day, but the statistics show that 30,000 of the total 100,000 units were bought in just the first four days alone, which also gave it the record of best console launch sales ever in Australia. That's 3 Xbox 360s per wallaby 'harvested' in Australia this year, but isn't even close to enough 360s for every one of the 57 million kangaroos. You fail Microsoft.
