02.09.2007 LISTEN TO MY RUBBER DUCKY DAMMIT!

Doug Lowenstein, the president of the Entertainment Software Association, made several speeches yesterday at the DICE Summit event, including the revealing of PS3's new marvel: Super Rub a Dub. Then, after showcasing a rubber ducky download game that uses the PS3 Sixaxis controller, he gave his last speech of the day, where he yelled at game publishers and developers for failing to protect the future of the industry. I'm not sure if he thought they were lacking in the rub department, or the dub department, but he went on to explain his frustration with the industry in full ducky detail.

"I'm sick and tired of people in this industry sitting on their hands and waiting for others to do the hard work. What is the problem? You cannot expect this industry to grow and prosper if you are not willing to put the time and effort into it." He then asked the audience how many people signed up for Video Game Voters Network. A few people raised their hands and Lowenstein replied with "I gotta tell you, that's pathetic ... you have to go on a website, click a few keystrokes, and you can send letters to Senators and Congressmen. And 90 percent of the people in this room who have a stake in the future of this industry haven't bothered to take the time to do that. And it makes me sick." Like suds in his stomach sick.

Lowenstein's bathtub tirade went further as he focused on publishers and developers who make controversial content, but get scared when it comes time to defending their decisions: "Nothing annoys me more ... if you want to be controversial, fine - that's great. But damn it, don't duck [hahaha he made a Rub a Dub pun!] and cover when the shit hits the fan." He also blasted gaming press, demanding a higher level of maturity. I didn't get to see any video of his speech, but all I can imagine is a big bald man giving a ducky diatribe to a room full of video game industry professionals, demanding more maturity while simultaneously waving bathtub toys in their faces with conviction.

He made some good points, and even spoke briefly about Sony's future, but I'll bet money that some little kid gets the wrong idea from Super Rub a Dub and takes his whole PS3 into the tub with him, making for some interesting headlines. Been predicting it for months now. Sony even has a shapeshifting bathtub patent - they might as well make the Sixaxis be its controller, and let you ride your bathtub around like a racing game. Imagine how much quicker your mornings would go if you could take a shower on your way to work. I'd like to see the Wii and 360 compete with a motorized cleansing console.
