03.30.2007 MORE E FOR ALL EXPO 2007 DETAILS

Let's review. People hated E3. E For All Expo was made. I hate E For All Expo. Ok, that covers the "why" - now for the rest of the details. Where? Los Angeles Convention Center. When? October 18th-21st. Ok, now how much? Depends:

  • Single-day passes for Thursday and Friday = $50 each.
  • Saturday or Sunday admission = $75.
  • Full pass for all four days = $110

And what can we expect to see if we attend? Mary Dolaher, The executive vice president of IDG who's organizing it, says that there may be some news coming from the event, but press conferences, keynote addresses, and big announcements won't be a part of the expo. Instead the focus is entirely on making the show floor interactive, so I might have a lot of fun when I go, but I probably won't have any big news to report on to you guys and gamer girls. Tickets should be available in June, lemme know if you're going so I can fear for my life.

03.12.2007 PSP2 LAUNCHING LATER THIS YEAR?

The picture above is almost certainly not real, so don't get your hopes up. Sony wouldn't dare make the PSP2 a DS doppleganger. If they did we'd probably have the first fanboy rage induced industry assassination. Kotaku does think a PSP2 is coming this year though. The recent rumors are that third party companies know the PSP2 is a reality, and they're all anxious to make a game for the new design and ride the sales bandwagon. Sony refuses to comment, meaning there will either be no third party games when it launches, or it's a complete lie. Kotaku's inside sources insist it's true though, and even offer the following details of the redesigned handheld:

  • The screen is gorgeous
  • The loads are faster
  • Improved buttons
  • Internal flash — 8GB
  • Possible touch-screen
  • Possible built-in camera
  • Uses UMD

Since nothing about this huge announcement was mentioned at the Game Developers Conference, speculation is that Sony will reveal their revamped handheld at the E3 event in July, and even announce its winter launch date. It would certainly be a great strategy for stealing the show from Nintendo and Microsoft, but it won't be safe for Sony's speakers if the PSP2 looks anything like the picture above. We might not see Super Smash Bros at E3, but brawls will still be had if Sony copies the DS design. And if the price is anywhere near the price of a whole PS3, Sony fanboys might throw in a few punches too.

Update: Kotaku has already confirmed the rumor to be true, giving them the enjoyment of revealing secret Sony news once again. UK Sony Computer Entertainment's Ray Maguire has admitted that the current PSP design is only "the first first iteration, and that a smaller, lighter version of the handheld is in the works." Ray stated that the PSP display screen wouldn't change, but didn't offer any more details. A Sony spokesperson later commented that besides firmware updates, they're in no rush for immediate changes, but they are working on a new PSP.

Update 2: SCEA's Dave Karraker has now come out to speak for Sony, and has said that no PSP redesign has been officially announced yet. He called Ray's comments "general context" regarding typical electronics trends, but he didn't deny any of his allegations.

11.02.2006 E3 2007 = GAME PRO EXPO 2007

Earlier this year in July, the ESA downsized the E3 we all know and love and renamed it the E3 Media and Business Summit, making it invite only in the future. How boring! While the end of E3 meant a better gaming business event for the industry, it also meant we'd no longer get the 3 day gamer heaven filled with booth babes that we longed to be a part of online and even in person.

After months of nothing more than hopes that it would return with a new name and setup, we've finally gotten our wishes granted. According to L.A. memos that are circulating, the new E3 will now be the Game Pro Expo, and take place in mid October 2007. It's expected to bring in 30,000 attendees in just the first year alone, and that the numbers would grow to be just as big as previous E3 turnouts. The ESA is even endorsing the GPE, and it will take place in the Los Angeles Convention Center on October 19, 20, 21 next year, so set your calendars and make those gaming Halloween costumes a little earlier next October so you can get bragging rights at GPE 07.

10.16.2006 E3 Media and Business Summit

There have been a lot of mighty empires on Earth over the years, but none of them ever was a match for the E3 of our youth. But times change and apparently so do gaming heavens. EMABS, that's right, EMABS, possibly even EM@BS if you're the creative type. The runners of E3 have felt the event had lost its focus on actual glaming, and that this newer E3 would go back to focusing on the business.
