A few days ago I found new pictures of Mario Party 8 on the Nintendo Wii, and I just found a dozen more, so here they are. You can see the new Dry Bones character in a few of the photos, and you get a look at several of the new boards from different angles, including Goomba's Booty Boardwalk, King Boo's Haunted Hideaway, and even DK's Treetop Temple.
The last Mario Party game was pretty boring overall, but the one level where everyone started with five stars and had to use chain chomps to constantly chase each other down was a lot of fun. Similarly, this game looks like it has a lot of linear routes that might have some new gameplay aspects in store for us. The one photo shows a long line of board spots that dead end at an ominous volcano suggesting that the game might progress in one direction further and further down into bob-omb filled mayhem. It would be awesome if they made the goal of the level being the last to survive, letting you only travel forward and down the volcano, with it getting more dangerous as you progress further and encouraging you to roll the lowest numbers possible. The graphics do look a lot better than in past Mario Party games, but mainly the levels seem more complete instead of just being filled with random objects. I'm hoping Nintendo does a lot with their haunted Boo mansion level, playing the whole board indoors is interesting. I'd like it if they hid 8 red coins throughout all of the house's rooms and challenged you to find the most before the turns run out.
The item orbs are supposedly being replaced by 'candy powerups' as you can see in the images below, and it looks like you can only hold three at a time, although there is room for about five. This game is pretty pivotal for the Wii, there's no reason for it to not take full advantage of the Wii - if it fails then a lot of Wii fans will start to doubt their system. But from this small look at the game a few of the mini games look like they're right up my drunken alley. The hexagon grid that challenges you to hit the glowing spots first should be addictive, and the level where you have to throw snowballs at the others on a cramped roof should be fun to play with a Wiimote too. WarioWare was a pretty pathetic showing of what the Wii can do, so hopefully this game is a lot more enjoyable. With 14 characters and 75 new mini games I don't doubt it will - it comes out on March 5th in America, and I'll be sure to review it and give a copy away to a random reader. Sorry for the further WarioWare: Smooth Moves review delay, the login problems are being dealt with and I promise that the WarioWare giveaway will be up tomorrow morning.
