05.29.2007 BIOSHOCK GAMEPLAY VIDEO AND PICTURES

This new video shows us the many ways to torture the other people inhabiting the underwater city in BioShock. Had you been wondering how to electrocute  a nurse or how many hits to the head wit ha wrench it takes to kill a janitor, this videos of short clips edited together has examples for every bloody and fiery death in the game. I like how you can use wet spots in a level to electrocute several seemingly harmless enemies all at once. If the goal of Irrational Games is to make us feel like an aquatic asshole before even playing their game, they're doing a great job. The flooding levels look intense though, I'll kill as many big daddies as it takes to beat this game when it comes out in August for Xbox 360. For more brutal imagery, check out the new pictures below.

05.01.2007 BIOSHOCK VIDEO: MY WATER JUST BROKE

And I didn't even know I had water. And how did it break? And how do you break water? I won't stop blogging until I figure out every single nonsensical English saying. Getting back on track, if you can judge the current state of the porn industry by the quality of its breasts, then an equal comparison in the video game industry would be its water graphics. Ok, that didn't get us on track at all, I just fucking love water graphics in video games.

Every year or two there's a game that revolves around water, and pinpoints the progress the industry has made in 3D graphics and particle effects in recent years. The water in the original Mario NES game didn't even move, and eventually the series progressed to Super Mario Sunshine, a whole game that revolved around water and its manipulation. BioShock will definitely be another one of those water games we remember, hopefully for positive reasons.

With the setting immersed in the secluded aquatic depths, the player's constantly surrounded by the water graphics with varying depths of view. The deep sea outside the sunken colony, the puddles on the floor, the spray from leaky tubes, and their interactions with one another through ripples, reflections, and caustics - all are shown off with skill in this video. I hope it's not just all for show, I'm expecting a good amount of gameplay to involve using water pressue to solve puzzles. I don't want another Ocarinia of Time water temple, but I do want a decent challenge. I mean, my water doesn't just break for any game, it has to be meaningful.

04.24.2007 PS3 STRIKES BACK . . . AGAIN

At the beginning of the month the PS3 attempted to strike back at the Xbox 360 by stealing BioShock's console exclusivity away from it. Even though the rumor turned out to be false, that's not stopping the PS3 from trying to strike back once again. And this time it's official:

"Kane & Lynch, announced in July as an Xbox 360 and PC title, and Crossfire, announced in September as an Xbox 360 and PC title, are now both officially hitting two next-gen consoles."

SCi's reasons for spreading their games to the PS3 are the same legitimately greedy reasons that brought Devil May Cry 4 to the 360, they know that they'll be able to sell even more copies this way. The good PS3 news doesn't end there though, RPG players will be happy to know that the ESRB ratings page for Eternal Sonata, known as Trusty Bell: Chopin's Dream in Japan, also has it listed as a PS3 title now. The future playing field's a bit more level now, who will strike next? I predict Wii Wookies ambush the PS3 to distract it while the 360 runs off with another title in the next few months.

04.06.2007 BIOSHOCKER: PS3 STRIKES BACK?

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Sony had exclusive access to Death Star Devil May Cry 4 on the PS3. Then, a few weeks ago Microsoft stole Devil May Cry 4's PS3 exclusivity away from Sony, and gave Xbox 360 fans A New Hope. Well, according to Three Speech (a site that's openly in cahoots with Sony as a news portal for PlayStation gamers) it looks like BioShock might not be just an Xbox 360/PC title anymore. When writing a long list of PS3 games to look forward to, here's what Three Speech had to say:

"Another hotly anticipated title from 2K Games (also appearing on Xbox 360) is BioShock. BioShock’s lineage can be traced back to the revered System Shock 2. Essentially an RPG, although it majors on shooting, BioShock will certainly be one of the most visually stunning games ever – it’s set in an abandoned underwater city built by a billionaire in the Art Deco style."

Hans Kutaragi and Phil Harribacca! Attack!!! I spent five minutes trying to figure out how to spell the Chewbacca roar, but failed every time. Help me out.

Have I already managed to butcher the story in Star Wars? Yes. Has PS3 struck back and leveled the playing field? Well, no. Kotaku already contacted 2K Games and was guaranteed that BioShock is still only coming out on the Xbox 360 and PC, as originally planned. But then again, the force is strong with them, they can't be trusted in times of Sony peril. Where is Kaz Hiraiwalker when you need him? Hopefully he'll return and restore 1080peace and order in the gaming galaxy. Don't be surprised if 2K Games changes their mind at a later date.

03.27.2007 MORE BIOSHOCK TRAILERS

Come on Irrational Games, we get it, we know your game is dark and mysterious, show us something new. This "welcome trailer" is a myriad of murky Myspace angles showing off their game's atmosphere. We get a few more dark, foreshadowing hints, and can see some of the same areas and events from different angles in this trailer, but I want to see more gameplay. It's probably for the best though, I think Irrational Games doesn't want to spoil any of the gameplay, and is showing scenes from different view points to stress their game's ability to give us choices.

Much focus is also put on "Aesthetics are a moral imperative" written in blood in the second video. This has me thinking that either the appearance of the building is what's saving it, or harming it, in its current aquatic environment (remember that weird, violent fish deity in Riven?), or that the interior will be painted with a lot of blood as the game progresses and grows more bizarre. Some of the animations in the game look weird also, but I think they're done that way on purpose, everything looks very fastidious in this FPS.

03.05.2007 NEW BIOSHOCK GAMEPLAY TRAILER

This new trailer shows us a lot of what Irrational Games has been working on in BioShock. The majority of the seven minute video is just one battle against a single "big daddy" enemy. You have to outwit the guardian of the little girl by doing more than just aiming and shooting, a speaker at the start of the clip talks you through what special items are involved in slaying the beastly looking scuba diver. The blood and fire particle effects look decent, but my favorite part is how well they worked shadows into the underwater environment. The translucent lighting combined with a creepy little girl who drinks blood makes me think the game will be a mix between Myst's setting and Silent Hill's gameplay. Irrational Games has done a great job keeping the story pretty mysterious, I plan on picking this up as soon as it comes out to see if it'll live up to the hype. The video ends with a narrator telling you that you'll have to make the choice between saving yourself or saving everyone else, so hopefully there will be a bunch of branching paths in the story and a few different endings for more interesting replayability than your typical shooting game.

03.01.2007 BIOSHOCK & FF TACTICS PSP RELEASE DATES

We've had plenty of Final Fantasy games come out on Game Boy Advance and DS Lite, now it's time for PSP to get some Square Enix loving. The PSP game Final Fantasy Tactics "Shishi Sensou" has been translated as "The Lion War" and comes out in Japan on May 10th for 4,800 yen. The PSP port has been enhanced from the original PlayStation game and includes new cinematics and even two new classes. You can see the artsy trailer for the game here, and more pictures of what gameplay is like here. An America release date still hasn't been announced yet though.

Also, 2K Games has confirmed that the Irrational Games first person adventure game BioShock will be released on August 21st in America, and August 24th in Europe. There won't be multiplayer, but the highly anticipated single player will be available on both Xbox 360 and PC when the time comes. Irrational Games has been bragging that their artificial intelligence is pretty advanced, but I'm not the type to buy a game just because the enemies impress me. Even if the story is a let down, the under water facility looks interesting enough to make this one at least worth a rental This August release date is later than they originally promised though, so it better not be glitchy.

12.18.2006 BIOSHOCK WEBSITE NOW OPEN TO PUBLIC

Looking for more BioShock news? Don't know what BioShock is? Recently the game's official website launched and went by unnoticed - you can check out the game's new website here. You'll get to listen to music that reminds you of the opening to the movie Signs, and read about "bathyspheres." I think it's funny they already have an Awards section even though the games isn't out yet, but they definitely deserve the "best of show" awards it has already received from past events. There's a news and screenshots section, and a forum section too, but that's not functional yet.

The game's art style, setting and gameplay looks awesome, but I still have a feeling the 360 game might get repetitive before you reach its end, although each new video I see of the gameplay refreshes me more and more. The creators are really hoping to change up how we look at the FPS genre, so hopefully they deliver.
