05.24.2007 PLAYING MARIO MUSIC ON GUITAR HERO II

I know you guys love the Guitar Hero games, and as we wait for more of the upcoming playlists to be revealed, here's a song we won't be getting with the purchase of any new Guitar Hero games. TheBBPS found this video of several Super Mario Bros. songs played on Guitar Hero 2 for PlayStation 2, and it makes me wish Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the 80s actually featured 80s game music instead of 80s band songs. It starts to get really fun at a minute and a half when the underwater music begins, and especially at two minutes when the sewer sounds kick in. If you're foaming at the fingers with desire to hack Guitar Hero 2 with your own custom songs, then check out this "idiot proof" guide. With a dozen steps and half a dozen needed programs to make it work, I wouldn't call it easy, but it's worth it to rock out to your own tunes with your own difficulty settings.

04.11.2007 GUITAR HERO TO THE RESCUE!

Help, somebody help, my Xbox 360 is dying and the only way to save it is giving it more Guitar Hero songs to play. Guitar Hero to the rescue!:

  • Pack 1: "Bark at the Moon," "Hey You," "Ace of Spades"
  • Pack 2: "Killer Queen," "Take it Off," "Frankenstein"
  • Pack 3: "Higher Ground," "Infected," "Stellar"
How much? $6.25 per pack is your hero-saves-the-day bill. Worst super hero ever. Not even Superman 64 was that cruel of a hero, at least Nintendo didn't bug us to buy Superman 64 bonus features a week after we burned the game cartridge. Guitar Hero sure is getting cocky, first it was them begging us to buy their game, and pleading that their expensive extra controller was worth the purchase. Now they're shoving CDs down our throats with more games on the way. Soon we'll see them on E! True Hollywood Story telling their life story and announcing they've got AIDS. You've changed Guitar Hero, you've changed.

02.27.2007 HALO MUSIC ON XBOX 360 GUITAR HERO 2?

Last month we learned that Guitar Hero 2 for Xbox 360 was going to include some extra content that wasn't on the PlayStation 2 version, and the rumors are starting to pick up Spartan speed. The extra content will be ten additional songs available for download on the Xbox Live Arcade, with one of them rumored to be the Halo theme song that was recorded on the Halo 2 soundtrack (Mjolnir Mix). This rumor spawned from the March issue of Xbox Official Magazine, so you'd think they might be privy to some inside information, but then you remember that the day after March is none other than April Fool's Day, so don't get your hopes up.

It makes sense to me though - a good amount of people who bought the Halo games in the past will probably also buy Guitar Hero 2 when it comes out. Giving them the possibility to rock out to their favorite game music is exactly the type of thing I can see Microsoft striving for, simply for  further bragging rights against the original PS2 game.

01.17.2007 GUITAR HERO UNDER NEVERSOFT'S CONTROL

Last week a release date was announced for the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero, and it was even rumored that an 80s songs expansion might be a possibility. Well here's where it all began, RedOctane has been keeping a secret from us all. Harmonix will not be developing the Guitar Hero series any longer. Instead, the Tony Hawk developer Neversoft will be the ones in charge. Unless the Neversoft Website was hacked, there's no denying it, you can see the new section for the game on Neversoft's homepage. Looks like they're hiring too if any of you are ready to break into the game industry.

This shift of power seems natural, but not altogether necessary. Neversoft could definitely benefit the series greatly, but Guitar Hero II was the fifth best selling game of 2006, so who says it needs the help? RedOctane still hasn't commented along with the rest of the silent, devious developers. Hopefully this means we'll get that 80s edition expansion as well as several other additions. They'd be foolish to not take advantage of Xbox 360's download capabilities.

12.07.2006 MAKE YOUR OWN GUITAR HERO CONTROLLER

The Guitar Hero charity event came and went, and after everyone sobered up they could all agree on one thing - JMillerid's 2 custom made Guitar Hero controllers were the coolest thing at the show. You can check out his step by step construction of his custom controllers here. As cool as it looks, I can barely play songs on expert - his spread out keys would make the game impossible for me.

11.30.2006 GUITAR HERO II FUNDE RAZOR

Are you good at Guitar Hero II? Are you good at drinking beer? Do you live in New York? The 2nd annual Funde Razor is set for Wednesday, December 6th at 6PM, and gives you beer to play video games, making it the coolest charity service since Crack For Kids. Last year they hied $1,600 for less fortunate gamers in hospitals, so if you live in New York try to show up and beer bong one for little Jimmy. If you're lucky you'll even get alcohol poison, get sent to the hospital, and reap your own charity rewards.

11.06.2006 WHAT A WEEK OF GAMING!

Gamers everywhere have been dreading this game as much as they have been anticipating it. If there was ever a week of bulimic bytes of gaming, this would surely be it. Aeropause has listed out all the must have games coming out in the next week alone, and realizing that each of these titles will release within 7 days of each other is enough to send you straight into epileptic attacks:

Gears of War (Xbox 360)
Most anticipated game of the whole year

Call of Duty 3 (PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360)
Jerrrrrrrrrrrry!

Guitar Hero II (PS2)
Trogdor the Burninator, here I come!

Tony Hawk's Project 8 (PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360)
The one Tony Hawk . . . to rule them all.

Viva Pinata (Xbox 360)
Rareware's last chance to save their company?

Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive
Eyahhhhhh!

Lumines II (PSP)
No microtransactions bitches!

This week will surely separate the mild gamers from the hardcore. I think I'm going to pace myself and just purchase Gears of War, and then sprint to the end and buy all the others plus a Wii at the end of the week. The PS3 is looking bleak though, my eBay gaming scheme may have slipped through my fingers yet again.

So what games/consoles will you be picking up this week? This will be a week of gaming many of us will never forget, so choose wisely . . .

10.25.2006 Trogdor Burninates Guitar Hero II Bonuses

This has to be the least expected news I've seen in a while: Trogdor the Burninator of Homestar Runner will be one of the bonus songs in the upcoming Guitar Hero II game. Mozilla Firefox 2.0 spellchecker hates this news, but I have to admit this is a pretty cool last minute twist even though I never got into Homestar Runner craze. You can spoil all the other bonus tracks by checking out the full list here.

10.06.2006 MTV Ruins Guitar Hero II Surprises

It's a good thing MTV recently bought the Guitar Hero II developers or they'd be in big trouble, like pregnant Brittney Spears big trouble. An advertisement on the MTV website showed actuallists of songs below gameplay of some portions of the video, which they quickly blurred when they noticed how retarded they had been, but it was too late. Fans screenshotted and deciphered their way to an almost complete listing of the songs on the next Guitar Hero game. I blame Carson Daly. Although it's speculative, here's the complete list they came up with:

Strutter - Kiss
Mother - Danzig
Monkey Wrench - Foo Fighters
Shout At The Devil - Motley Crue
Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight - Spinal Tap
Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana
Message In A Bottle - Police
Woman - ?Wolfmother?
You Really Got Me - Van Halan (Kinks)
Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas

Them Bones - Alice in Chains
Search and Destroy - ?The Stooges?
Tatooed Love Boys - The Pretenders
War Pigs - Sabbath
Cherry Pie - Warrant
Who Was In My Room Last Night - Butthole Surfers
Girlfriend - ?Darkness, maybe Mathew Sweet?
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking - Rolling Stones
Sweet Child of Mine - Guns N’ Roses
Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine
John The Fisherman - Primus
Freya - Sword*
Bad Reputation - ?Thin Lizzy, maybe Joan Jett?
Jessica - Allman Brothers
Crazy On You - Heart
Trippin On A Hole In A Paper Heart - Stone Temple Pilots
Rock This Town - Stray Cays
Last Child - Aerosmith
Stop - ?Janes Addiction?
