05.25.2007 MARIO MUSHROOM CAKE MASTERPIECE

I can't stand mushrooms on my pizza but I'd love to eat this dessert. Although, I usually don't trust food that's taller than my game consoles, this looks like a few inedible ingredients may have been added into the frosting. I R Serious found these pictures and this description:

"Sculpting this cake truly brought back many fond memories of days when sis and I had Nintendo consoles permanently attached to our palms. … It always starts off with a sketch; which I was pretty happy with … and began working on it 3 days ago. It does take many hours to painfully sculpt every little detail but the outcome usually is rewarding when more effort is put in."

A gamer girl who bakes gaming cakes this great, I think I'm in love. If the side around the cake was an accurate recreation of World 1-1, I'd have Mario stars in my eyes. The pictures below start with the concept art and takes you for a trip around the cake, gives a peak inside, and flag pole finales with the full picture of Mario popping out the top.

05.24.2007 PLAYING MARIO MUSIC ON GUITAR HERO II

I know you guys love the Guitar Hero games, and as we wait for more of the upcoming playlists to be revealed, here's a song we won't be getting with the purchase of any new Guitar Hero games. TheBBPS found this video of several Super Mario Bros. songs played on Guitar Hero 2 for PlayStation 2, and it makes me wish Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the 80s actually featured 80s game music instead of 80s band songs. It starts to get really fun at a minute and a half when the underwater music begins, and especially at two minutes when the sewer sounds kick in. If you're foaming at the fingers with desire to hack Guitar Hero 2 with your own custom songs, then check out this "idiot proof" guide. With a dozen steps and half a dozen needed programs to make it work, I wouldn't call it easy, but it's worth it to rock out to your own tunes with your own difficulty settings.

05.08.2007 TLB MARIO THEME PROM NIGHT PICTURES

These kids must have the happiest parents in the world. When high school students collaborate to make Super Mario Brothers their senior prom theme, it's a nice way to let the school know that no one is getting laid later that night. I'm so proud of my readers - to walk into prom and see this retro room and blow your load before the night's even begun takes some serious guts. Dancing to display your digital dorkiness is a quite the valid cause. Or, if you're too shy, they even setup the massive NES controller seen above to play video games and pass the time:

"I just had my senior prom and the theme was Super Mario Brothers so I snapped some photos and I thought you might be interested. The prom was at Chelsea High School and . . . the photo of the large NES Controller with the hands on it needs some explanation. That controller was wired up to actually control the original Super Mario Bros. game which was projected onto a wall nearby. All the buttons worked and it was possible to play solo, but it was much easier to have someone manning the control pad and someone else on the A and B buttons."

The only part of his explanation I skipped over is how you got a free condom for every 1UP you snag, Alex probably got a ton of Princess pussy that night. Thanks for sharing the pictures, Alex! Whoever did the art must have failed Goomba 101 art class, but it still kicks ass. My favorite part is how the Principal obviously said there was no way they could use sand in the desert scene, so they just threw some light brown paper on the ground instead.

05.08.2007 E! TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY: LIFE OF LUIGI

After years of frustrations, failures, and fireflowers, Luigi finally found the fame he always longed for with Luigi's Mansion on the GameCube. This is the countless E! True Hollywood Story home-made documentary video about the 8-bit brothers, but this one won "Best Short Film" at the 2006 GenCon Film Festival by adding in a few additional previously unknown chapters in their lives. Such as the love affair involving Ms. Pac-man and the illegitamate toddler toadstools that followed. I hope Luigi spent his GameCube fortune wisely, we probably won't be seeing that guy again for a while. Makes me wonder if Baby Mario and Baby Luigi will ever grow up in the franchise, and if their roles will be reversed in the future.

05.07.2007 MIYAMOTO COULD HAVE MADE HALO

Shigeru Miyamoto must be jealous of the spotlight being on Ken Kutaragi lately, here's his attempt to sound more crazy:

"I could make Halo. It's not that I couldn't design that game. It's just that I choose not to. One thing about my game design is that I never try to look for what people want and then try to make that game design. I always try to create new experiences that are fun to play."

I'm sure many Halo haters will agree, that Halo is a pretty cut and dry FPS, but it's still a damn good one. Well, I'd argue the second was, and not the first, but obviously both sold well. Miyamoto's strategy of shoving things we don't want in our mouth, and then us realizing, yeah this does taste pretty good with the blood of my severed tongue, has been an award winner until recently. He was hired to literally save Nintendo, and delivered numerous solid game series, and the Wii has been sculpted by his view of the future lying in gamers growing up and wanting to play with their families.

Bold as usual, but with the industry that's grown so large, his methods are starting to be beat out by more competitors. So you fail Miyamoto, you're nowhere near as crazy as this cockfag. You totally could make Halo. But instead of Earth being surrounded by a halo, it'd be a triforce, and that would be totally inefficient. Green men > green fairy dudes.

05.07.2007 2D SPRITE SUPER MARIO GALAXY VIDEO

The best thing about 2D Mario, is that you can make just about every 3D Mario game before it ever comes out with the original blueprints. Is Nintendo taking too long to make Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii? No problem, order some pixel cranes and bits and bytes bulldozers, and destroy the very ground Mario walks on. And challenge him to find a way through space. How does he do it? He's seen Pirates of the Caribbean III already, he knows that the answer to any impossible problem is as simple as riding on a turtle's back.

Every week there's a new site with a new crazy 2D Mario video claiming to find the absolutely hardest Mario game ever, but I think Siliconera has finally found the craziest of them all. A world where no floor or ceiling exists, turtles float, and simple plumbing pipes go through interstellar black holes to new levels in another Super Paper Mario dimension. At this rate, it won't be long until Mario finds a warp pipe to just about every Nintendo game ever made. The day Epona trips over a pipe protruding from Hyrule's ground, is the day I stop paying for video games forever. Link truly would be the Hero of Time, with all the games within his reach for free. I never trusted that Malon guy for a second. I always knew he was up to no good.

05.04.2007 MARIO VIDEO: BLIND GAMERS ARE PUSSIES

Don't worry, he's not blind, so all bets are off. Lots of Mario videos lately -- earlier this week some Asian dude beat the first few levels of the original Mario NES game with his back turned to the TV, and now everyone's doing it, thinking they're hot shit even though they're taking warp pipes galore. Let's see you grab the star on World 1-1, run through a few goombas, jump all the pits, make it a few inches up the flag, down the sewers, not run the ceiling the whole damn way, and manage to pinpoint the 1UPs in each of the first two levels. Then kill yourself four times on purpose, and still manage to beat the game on one life. Then I'll be impressed. Tonight I'm going to pull out the NES and give it a try to see how far I can get after an hour of practice, I'm thinking at least World 2 without warping.

05.04.2007 GAME OVER MARIO MUSHROOMS VIDEO

Mario's finally out of the Mushroom Kingdom and into our boring realm of not-retro-gaming reality. He hates it, and I would hate him back, but Mario in Mushroom Kingdom is what we all know and love, and by taking mushrooms he has trippy flashbacks to the good old days. His obsession has consumed the coins out of his pockets like a hungry Pirhanna plant, and put him in a position where he's both poor and now Princess-less. The downward spiral continues, and he turns once again to the shrooms, and you can't blame him for all the times we made him abuse the substance. Will this be his last time? Will he overdose and pay the ultimate price in plumbing? The answer's pretty obvious, although the way they approach all the personalities and scenarios is pretty clever and well thought out. I like how a "bad guy" robs him of his high by running through him. Although the kitchen jump is my favorite.

05.03.2007 VIDEO: TOP TEN 8-BIT GAMES

GameTrailers has another classic top ten list for us to watch. They attempted to choose the best ten 8-bit games of all time, and somehow rank them in a list:

  • 10. River City Ransom
  • 9. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
  • 8. Shinobi
  • 7. Dragon Warrior IV
  • 6. Tecmo Super Bowl
  • 5. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
  • 4. Mega Man 2
  • 3. Contra
  • 2. The Legend of Zelda
  • 1. Super Mario Bros. 3
Damn. You could easily switch any of the top six into the number one spot depending on what kind of gamer you are, so many memorable moments came from these games. It's a good thing I didn't make this list because I'm completely bias to Bubble Bobble. For the sole fact that Legend of Zelda started its series, and Super Mario Bros. 3 was able to work off of an existing series of characters and gameplay, I think I'd bump up the original Zelda to number one. How do you like their list's order? What would you guys and gamer girls add or take off of the list?

04.26.2007 MARIO KART R/C RACER VIDEO

Playing Mario Kart on the TV is out of style, the new cool thing to do is racing real Mario racers around in real life. When I watched the video I figured the sound effects were added in afterwards, but the R/C racer actually comes with them built in. Here's the specifics:

  • Large Size R/C Mario Kart Racer
  • Nintendo GameCube Style Remote Control
  • Five function control : Right, Left, Forward, Reverse and Turbo
  • Digitized Sounds from the Game
  • 12" Long
  • Requires 1 9V Battery and 8 AA Batteries (not included)

I completely forgot about R/C racers until a week ago when the shitty weather in Pittsburgh disappeared. It's like my neighbors had five kids over Winter break, and all of a sudden a gang of R/C racers is outside my window every morning tearing up the town. They don't even go to school, they just play with their futuristic R/C racers that never need new batteries. And when the sun sets, instead of selling crack on the street corner like their older brothers, they go out for night races. What has America come to? The birds even moved away because it was drowning out their incessant afternoon bitching, and ruining their chances of mating this Spring. I was a few days away from calling the EPA on these assholes, but now I've found a new solution. I'll just beat them at their own game. You can order one for yourself here, $50 seems like a reasonable price for terrorizing the innocent youth in my neighborhood. Now someone show me where I can buy dynamite.
