05.17.2007 PAIN PS3 GAMEPLAY VIDEO

PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have been focusing on the wrong thing all along. Stranglehold lets you destroy the environments, and Lost Odyssey declares you an indestructible god ready to take on entire armies in a single battle. But is that what we really want? Yes, of course we do, but it's good to see someone think outside the boundaries, and Pain is a game all about finding those boundaries. As you can see in the video above, the point of the game is to see just how much pain you can possibly make the main character endure.

The game starts in a downtown level with a human-sized catapult in the center of the city, and Idol Minds leaves the rest up to you. There's nine different modes of gameplay and you can even record your most ravaging routes and send the videos to your friends online. An amusement park level is also planned and my head's already thinking of all the Roller Coaster Tycoon slaughter possibilities. The cartoony 3D geometry and graphics should make the levels easy to pump out, so hopefully after it releases this Fall on the PlayStation Network we'll get new level downloads every few months. Jack Thompson's been calling games murder simulators in the past few years, and finally we have a suicide simulator to add to the list.

12.21.2006 SNOW WORLD VR GAME TO HELP BURN VICTIMS

Nvidia has teamed up with the University of Washington's Harborview Burn Center and Imprint Interactive to make a virtual reality system called SnowWorld, that helps reduce pain for burn victims by getting them to become so immersed in the game that they forget about their injuries altogether. Using Nvidia's graphics technology, the virtual reality setup will take the players on an interactive journey through an icy 3D canyon and lets you throw snowballs at anything from snowmen to mammoths. PS3's Afrika game that's in development interests me for the same immersive reasons as this game does, but it's great to know that it's being made purely for the benefit of injured gamers. If you live near the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, then you can even check it out for yourself where it will be on display until July 29 next year.

If you're interested in similar medical gaming setups, there's also a virtual reality system for phantom limb patients.

12.01.2006 MORE GAMER TATTOO PICS FROM READERS

2 weeks ago I put together what I thought was the best 25 gaming tattoos on the net from what I could find. I tried to judge based on how large and colorful some were, how painful they might be, and even the WTF factor they might induce from viewers in public. I asked you guys and girls to send in your own tattoos and I got a few emails every day so I held off on posting this until the submissions died down.

I still think my original list is a solid representation of the best gamer tattoos, but a few that you all submitted definitely deserve to be on it - one of the recent submissions (Maduin's leg) is even damn near the best I've ever seen. So keep sending in your tattoos and sometime in 2007 I'll update it and make a best of the best gallery.

And I love game art too - so if you make any awesome paintings or videos involving video games make sure to show me. Also, are any of you in gaming music bands? That shit kicks ass too, so lemme know! Here are the 25 new pics in no particular order, with their owner's name included when you click on them:

Update: I swear I know how to count to 25, but there's now more since people keep sending in their tattoos. Mail me yours over the weekend and I'll add them too.

11.17.2006 BEST 25 GAMING TATTOOS EVER! [Update 1]

You've all seen them before, but you've never seen this many in one place. From Mario to Halo to Zelda to Final Fantasy to Bubble Bobble to the infamous Pac Man butt crack tattoo to NES guns, there's enough body ink in this gallery to make even Michael Jackson look pretty. A FF7 tattoo ironically scored 7th on the 25 list, which was judged based on how large and colorful the tattoos were, how obscure the related games were, and the 'WTF is that' factor of certain body tattoo placement. And pain. The winner of them all had to hurt like a Chain Chomp, but it was worth it!

If you have any gaming tattoos of your own, feel free to send them in to get seen. Or if you found a tattoo you think is badass enough to jump onto this Top 25 list then that works too, I challenge you to wow my retinas with retro love!

Update 1: Now's your last chance to send in your gamer tattoos. I got a bunch of submissions and will be posting them all late tomorrow (Tuesday) night. So far I've received some really cool ones that even deserve to dethrone a few of the top 25 winners. Check back tomorrow to see some more amazing gamer skin art.
