04.12.2007 PLAY SPACE INVADERS WITH YOUR BODY
TechEBlog found another retrosexual video of people reviving classic games in gigantic proportions. Developed by Douglas Edric Stanley, this huge Gameworld exhibition just launched at the Laboral Art Center in Gijón, Spain. Running from now until June 30, 2007, random visitors can digitally defend the room by moving their arms out over the edge of the railings, and the display will fire corresponding shots at the floating foes on the opposing wall. Only a few people in the video were willing to make a fool of themselves, but it looks like there's no limit to how many shots you can fire at once. Douglas's design actually started back in 2001, as a creative way of coping with the World Trade Center disaster:
"I emulated the original Space Invaders, and added the possibility of using a simple flashlight or car headlights to control the movement of the lone defender. I’ve been experimenting projecting the game directly onto buildings such as the Marseille World Trade Center, where any common citizen can come and defend the world against alien invaders from the sky."
It's about time someone thought up a positive use for video game violence. If the two World Trade Center buildings knew how to play Pong they could have just bounced the terrorist planes back and forth until the Atari Air Force showed up.
