03.09.2007 GTA IV RUMOR: MUSIC CONFIRMS NEW YORK?

The Grand Theft Auto IV debut trailer is still 19 days away, but we've already got a good idea of where the game might take place. Tokyo has been rumored along with Paris, London, and other European locations, but if a new rumor is true, then New York is looking like the winner. NeoGAF user VALIS is claiming to know this inside information: "Friend of mine was just contacted today to be on the GTAIV soundtrack. He was in the 1980s NY hardcore band Breakdown. He had a laugh at the lowball offer, but of course he's not gonna pass it up. Might not mean anything. But if you did want to play Kojak... Late 1980s setting? New York again? Nah. Not necessarily." Complete lie? Was Rockstar Games just testing the Internet for rumors? Will we buy the game even if it takes place in Antarctica? All are very possible. Thanks to reader Lawl for the tip!

All I know is that if I don't get to blow up the Statue of Liberty I'm trading it in after I beat it. When I'm old and frail I want to die in one of two ways, but preferably both. Either by riding my wheelchair into a tornado, since that would be awesome. Or by jumping off the top of the Statue of Liberty and ruining the tourist attraction for the whole country. I don't care if there's restriction fencing, my 170 year old ass will saw through it if I have to. People ride over Niagara Falls and jump into the Grand Canyon all the time, but there can only be one shithead who jumps off the Statue of Liberty before they shut down its tours forever. After that the Statue of Liberty is basically a Tom Fronczak grave monument memorial, and I rob the entire country of their symbol of pride. Let's see you pay for a better tombstone than mine.

By the time you're 170 some moron with dynamite up his ass would've already blown it up. The best thing you'll be able to jump off of is the St. Louis arch.

Uhmm, why would they license some old shitty hardcore band that no one has heard of? Any and ALL good New York hardcore comes from Long Island.

I'm still skeptical about New York being the setting for GTAIV. Why? Because Liberty City is New York City, and it was done in GTAIII. Then again, they jumped up a letter instead of just added a subtitle, so it could mean they're returning to the original city, but I think it's just because they're using a new engine (presumably) on next-gen consoles.

Well, GTA: San Andreas had a classic hip hop station where just about every single artist was from NYC (Kool G, Slick Rick, Gang Starr, etc), and of course that game wasn't set in anything resembling the empire state. And since categorizing some old cheap songs as a retro station is pretty easy, the only way you could deduce the game setting/time is by finding the most current songs being scouted. Of course, it's pretty obvious that the game will be in the present day. I think GTA IV will just be a sharp update to GTA III. It may even be set in Liberty City again. I thought I read somewhere that the map won't be as huge as San Andreas, since they'll want to detail everything from the ground up again.

They already shut down the Statue of Liberty. You haven't been able to go up inside her and get to the top since 9/11. Maybe you can jump off the Washiington Monument in your rocket wheelchair.

Well I hope it's not in Liberty City again, some areas of it are a huge pain in the ass to navigate, like the area around Salvatore's house. I liked Vice City because of the nice main roads which were easy to navigate.

SPOILER: GTA4 takes place in ALL locales that have appeared in ALL previous GTA games. That includes all "sub-cities." There will be two new settings: a Tokyo-type city and an Eastern European-type city where the military is in control. Realize this is Grand Theft Auto IV, not a side-story update like Vice City and San Andreas. In other words, GTAIV is to GTAIII what GTAIII was to GTA2. Get read to have your brains blown out of your asses.
