03.15.2007 TOP TEN BEAT EM UP GAMES

ScrewAttack is back with another Top 10 video for us - this time they attack the beat 'em up genre. There rules aren't strict, they're just looking for arcade style fun, but I completely disagree with their list:

  • 10. Batman Returns
  • 9. Golden Axe
  • 8. Battletoads
  • 7. Streets of Rage 2
  • 6. River City Ransom
  • 5. Guardian Heroes
  • 4. Final Fight
  • 3. Double Dragon
  • 2. The Simpsons
  • 1. TMNT Turtles in Time

I don't care how many times I dressed up as a Ninja Turtle for Halloween when I was a kid, and I don't care how cool saying "BARF!" is while using your buddy as a weapon - everyone knows the best beat 'em up of all time is Streets of Rage 2. The only one of these games I haven't played is the Sega Saturn game Guardian Heroes, which does sounds pretty awesome, but there's no way it could top Streets of Rage 2. For five summers in a row my whole block would play Streets of Rage 2 every night - if we occasionally played hide and go seek tag in the dark instead, we lost half the block of players. It took both Goldeneye 64 and Super Smash Bros. 64 to overcome our Rage addiction. Basically, it took almost all of Nintendo 64 to beat one old school game. What do you guys think of the list?

River City Ransom was always my favorite, with Streets of Rage 1 and 2 close behind... but Turtles in Time doesn't bother me at #1

It's a fantastic game

Double dragon should've topped the list- the arcade versions of dd1 and dd2 are why grandma doesnt have a kidney.

Kinda suprised that neither X-men or the Dungeons and Dragons series didnt make it. Not saying they should be number one, but I expected at least one if not both to be up there.

Playing x-men at the arcades with 5 other people was the whole reason I went to the arcades as a kid

Guardian Heroes is one of the best fighters ever. I rented it by accident years ago because i thought the cover looked cool and was blown away. Bought it a week later. The video is a bit misleading though - the six player mode is like a battle royale thing, you couldn't play the story mode with six people. I also agree with Dan and Noah - take Batman Returns (?!) off that list and put The Warriors on. Dungeons and Dragons games are basically Golden Axe but better and X-men is a classic. FINALLY, combine the separate Battletoads and Double Dragons to make Battletoads and Double Dragons: The Ultimate Team.

Wow, I read the list while the video was playing and I was thinking that all of The Simpsons games I ever played (NES) were shitty, but then I realized that I actually do remember playing the arcade game, and it was pretty awesome. That is a nice catch by whoever made this vid.

TMNT The Arcade Game for NES was always my favorite TMNT game. I don't really remember the others.

I would put Streets of Rage higher too.

R.C.Ransom was pretty awesome, and I would put it as one my favorite games of all time; but its not really a straight Beat 'Em Up. Pretty much all of the other games in the list (I think) were games that you could only go in one direction. RCR let you run around the map at will (although you did have to defeat bosses in a pretty strict order). It had other RPG type elements like collecting cash from enemies and then using it to buy skills, health, stamina, and other upgrades. I don't think any of the other games on the list had anything like that. To me RCR is the best overall game on this list but I could see why they put it at 6 since it doesn't really fit the rules.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned The Punisher. (http://www.arcadehits.net/pics/snapshot/final_boss_punisher.png) Granted, it's a Final Fight clone with guns, but it was far more fun.

Golden Axe should not have made the list at all. I tried it recently, and that game is awful.

This list pretty much fails. Batman Returns? Might as well have picked the Batman Forever arcade game. At least that had more nipples.

My personal favorite beat-'em-up was the arcade Alien vs. Predator. It was straight badass. Lots of different attacks, great enemy design, hilarious crappy dialogue. Hell, one of the Predators could do a friggin' Dragon Punch straight outta SFII.

Streets of Rage 2 should be tops though. I always wanted to know: what the hell is Axel saying when he does his charging uppercut? It sounds like "grab the paw" but that ain't right.

If you had ever played Guardian Heroes, you would not only understand why it's on the list, but you'd know that it should be higher than it is. (I'd put it at 2, right behind Aliens vs. Predator, with the Dungeons and Dragons games in there somewhere, too. Batman Returns goes bye-bye, as does Battletoads (which really shone in the inventive gameplay of a lot of the non-beat-'em-up sections).
